How to Choose a Pipette: A Practical Guide
By Pipettes Guru
The right pipette is the one matched to your volumes, your throughput and your hands — in that order. Buying "up" to a fancier instrument you don’t need wastes money; buying the wrong volume range quietly wastes accuracy. Here’s how I work through the decision with a new lab.
Start with volume — and read the spec sheet correctly
A pipette is most accurate in the top third of its range, so choose the model whose maximum sits just above your typical volume. But specs only mean something if you know what they’re measuring — our guide to pipette specifications, accuracy and precision decodes the numbers, and the science of accurate liquid handling explains what actually moves them on the bench.
Manual or electronic?
Electronic pipettes earn their cost in repetitive, high-throughput protocols and reduce strain; manual instruments are simpler, cheaper and perfectly accurate. We compare them honestly in electronic vs. manual pipettes.
Don’t ignore ergonomics
Repetitive pipetting is a leading cause of lab RSI. Lighter instruments, lower plunger forces and electronic options all help — see ergonomic pipetting techniques.
Special case: serological and cell culture
For larger volumes and cell culture, a serological pipette and controller is the right tool — our serological pipette guide covers sizing, and our catalog carries the Oxford OSP range.
